2.                                             THE MUSHROOM MINE

Carter County Mushroom Mine:                                   Visit One of the creepiest areas in Eastern Ky. There are countless                                  stories of this place being terribly haunted. Ghosts, sounds of                                         chains being rattled, and growling coming from within. There has                                      been researched confirmation that satanic cults held rituals and                                         gatherings here at certain times of the year. There has also                                           been numerous criminal activity taking place on this site. One                                        case involved a man murdering his parents and driving them                                         20 minutes to this location, then dumping the bodies inside the                                        mine. It is unquestionably a spine-chilling place and once                                          you arrive there and step out by your car, you will feel an uneasiness that is difficult to explain in words. Some History: This site was a mining operation, removing untold tons of limestone resulting in the upper portion of the hill being for the most part hollowed out. This was a major operation with passageways large enough to drive dump trucks in, and side passages branching off to the left and to the right. The mine contains approximately 2.6 million square feet of floor space hidden under the hill top. There are large columns of limestone remaining to support the ceiling

After the limestone mine was shut down, likely after WWII, the abandoned site was eventually used for the commercial production of mushrooms. The dark man-made caverns were perfect for this endeavor, being a constant 55-56 degree temperature year-round, with easy access to a nearby road.  The business closed down in the 1970’s.

During the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union there was fear of a nuclear attack and there was talk of turning the abandoned mine into a bomb shelter, complete with steel blast-proof doors. The thick limestone layers combined with the large cavity would provide both protection and space for storing food and other essentials as well as people. This idea was abandoned however likely due to costs and the reduction of arms by the two super-powers. Recently the mine was looked at as a possible storage site for data in the form of computers and magnetic tapes, as well as other information storage devices. Work began on this site to start this transformation, however the company went bankrupt and all construction and efforts immediately and mysteriously ceased. You can see remnants of these buildings near the entrance of the mines and along the side. There were once tall fences blocking the entrance but they have been knocked down.

We cannot require that you go inside the mine because we do not own this property, however what you do once you get there is totally your decision. It’s GO AT YOUR OWN RISK. The answer to this question however can be completed without entering the mine.

Directions: Take 2nd Olive Hill Exit and turn LEFT. Turn Right at Dairy Queen.  Find Qualls Oil. Here you shall turn. Quick Factoid: If you spot the freestanding old chimney on the Left just as your round the bin and go down the road, you will know you are on track. There are many remnants of the past throughout Carter Co. Turn LEFT at one of Carter County’s Oldest still standing Country Stores. I used to enjoy going in here, but it appears it has finally closed its doors. Go up and around curve and you can’t miss this site.

Fill in the four blanks

3.                                  GRAYSON'S GRAVEYARD OVERLOOK

The Look Out: Nestled but forgotten above the town of Grayson, Ky is an old graveyard. Many graves here are from the 1800;’s they include the early settlers of the town and many Civil War soldiers. Veterans of the Civil War would actually come meet up on this hill each year in reunion. It is quite a shame that such a historical place has nearly gone to ruin. Trees have fallen, weeds have grown, and ghost stories continue to emerge. People who live nearby have reported seeing strange lights, hearing sobs even in daylight, and noticing the heavy feeling of eyes upon them while walking along the overgrown passages there. Perhaps you will stumble upon a fallen soldier or hear some muffled tears as you venture here. From here you can practically look straight down over Main Street, You can see it all from this designated spot.                                 My guess this area was used as a lookout of some kind in the 1800s

Directions: Grayson E. Main toward Olive hill. Turn RIGHT where 45 MPH ends, then RIGHT quickly again. The road narrows but keep on going. You will surface in the heart of it all. ** While you are here make a complete evening of it and Visit The Carter County Corn Maze at Grayson Fairgrounds off of Rt 60 going toward Olive Hill.**

Q: Near a Dead tree Standing you will find another Tree of Stone—A woodsman of the World---who was he (full name) and when did he die?

4. THE CRYING LADY

The Crying Lady: In the Ashland Cemetery (you do the research to find your own way) you will find the Crying Lady Statue guarding the Fischer-Ringo Gravesite. This statue has been surrounded with folklore for years. It is said that certain times of the year when you visit her, sit up on bench beside her, and look under to view her face you can see a tear dripping from one of her eyes. Others say there are times they look for her as they drive through the cemetery and cannot locate her at all only to come back the next day and she was just where they thought she would be. While many describe a chilling feeling of uneasiness while at her side, some say they feel comfort. In the 80’s a homeless man lived here, hiding his belongings in the bushes in the day, and sleeping near her feet at night. Locate this cemetery and this statue on your own.

TASK: Simply take a photo of yourself  sitting up on bench with The Crying Lady and email in as an attachment or copy and paste to your final answers for credit.

5 The Indian Chief: Out in the boondocks off rt 3 in Boyd Co. Ky. You will find a patch of land said to be “guarded” by the ghost of an old Indian Chief that was murdered by Daniel Boone. The Indian Chief roams the woods behind the property and peers out at you from the trees. People have heard walking in the brush just on the other side of the creek, they have spotted a man dressed  in animal hides dart behind trees but never to be located, they have also heard tribal drums. He is still trying to defend his land before it was taken from him. On a rock high above the ground there is a carving that reads : D.Boone KILT Indian Chief Here. This is Private Property, but permission has been granted to visit here for this part of the Rally. If anyone approaches you with questions you may tell them you have permission from landowner to be here for a Road Rally.

TASK: Utilize those GPS devices. At the intersection of Bolts Fork and Jacks Fork there is some land ..directly across from Ross Chapel Church. There is a place to pull down and into land…a small dirt road. Park here and find a Rusty Barrell on your Right walk ahead of (your back to road but following the weedline) 20 steps.  Now look to your Right and you should see a small path leading down to the creek. Dive in and find our Black Box and follow the directions inside! PLEASE take ONLY one and replace the lid and box EXACTLY as you found it and closed tightly! THis box will be monitored weekly for accuracy.
Q: What can you do at Z****.***?

6.The Forgotten Cemetery: In Ironton Ohio, just off Route 52, you will find a small road to the left after you get off exit. Take this road and you will find the Forgotten Cemetery on your RIGHT. Parking is limited, though there are a couple pulloffs on side of road. You cannot drive through this cemetery…it’s forgotten remember? Many of the graves here are overturned, some exposed even. There are grave sites dating back to early 1800’s here and they are scattered all over the woods.  This is another spooky place where a feeling of uneasiness is not uncommon. ** Spice up your evening by  skipping over to the "Haunted Tunnell Attraction" in Ironton held weekends in October. This is one of Ironton's earliest burial grounds and also one of the most forgotten and disturbed.  Out of hundreds of graves there may only be five still standing upright.  It is rare to find a cemetery quite this unsettled and overturned.  In a place like this it is no wonder that reports of ghostly encounters exist. One local says: "I have experienced the undead there. I have seen a woman darting into the woods  after sunset. I have heard crying there. I used to hang out there with some friends as a teen and several of us saw her one night as we camped out there. The only time in my life I have felt a "presence" not of this world." For many, when they visit they describe a feeling of sadness or lonliness heavy in the air, and others say different areas of the cemetery actually provoke different emotion. See for yourself..allow your senses to guide you and dont' just ignore those "vibes".

Directions: Take first Ironton Exit coming from Ashland Bridge. Turn RIGHT off of exit then take first LEFT. Graveyard is on Right.

Q1: Find the old Headless Eagle. From the direction he faces take 28 paces. Here at your feet lies William Burdett. Who was he the son of?

Q2: Go into the woods just at your side. You will see numerous crumbling graves scattered throughout the trees. Watch your step...the stones are everywhere and the earth is unusually SOFT here.  Under a Large Oak Tree you will find this:

How old was she when she died?

Q3: Who lies in the VIOLATED VAULT? First and Last names please.

TIPS: You may encounter the following: Wildlife, crime, minimal parking, a need to use stealth moves, uneven/soft ground. Go at your own risk!

7. Big Foot Sightings: In Boyd, Greenup, and Carter counties there have been a recent flare up of “Big Foot Sightings”. People claiming to see a huge, humanlike figure rustling through wooded areas such as near the Industrial Parkway and this place I am sending you to now. Turn off of I64 ...the Grayson Exit (Right if coming from Ashland, Left if coming from Olive Hill) travel approx 1.2 miles and turn RIGHT at the big concrete Pactolus Bridge. Just as this new bridge ends you will see a small pull off to your LEFT and a guard rail blocking the old road.  Go there and walk the Old Road…the remnants are still there. Walk to the end where you will be faced with the Old Bridge (blocked off now). Walk quietly and listen. Do you hear any rustling in the weeds?

Q: What is Jerrod's nickname?

8. Visit this Virtual Challenge and FIGHT SOME ZOMBIES!

Q1: What is "SURVIVAL" an acronym for when it comes to fighting zombies?

Q2: What happens to the dog at the end of path1?

9.HAPPY RIDGE---NOT SO HAPPY: Travel to a place..land as far as you can see. Property owned by the Addington brothers once used as a strip mine. For years this land has been used by not only teens looking for an isolated place to party, but by criminals of all shapes and sizes, including murderers, because Happy Ridge is known for more than one murder over the years. In addition to murders there have been reports of much satanic/cult rituals taking place here. One of the most horrific murders involved the killers taking their victim to this place, torturing him, shooting him, and leaving him tied to a tree  for the coyotes and other wildlife here to feed on. Many people have experienced terror up here and we will be the first to tell you ...it's not a safe place to be. Please be careful and GO AT YOUR OWN RISK! An eerie feeling guaranteed however. This land is now for sale so if anyone asks, you could always be considering a purchase. =o)
In addition to the murders I mentioned above there is more than likely a variety of criminal activity taking place after hours...but certainly one of the creepiest places in our area with a dark history indeed.

Directions: From Rt 5 in Boyd CO. Ky take Daniels Fork. Travel until the road forks then go Right up hill. This is Happy Ridge Rd. Take the winding road up to graveyards (Sparks and Bates) Drive straight pass Bates graveyard and take next LEFT (dirt/gravel road). Travel the Road to the top of the Hill.

Q: Find the I LOVE YOU  Rock...standing upon it, or in front of  it and looking straight ahead in front of you what do you see. Describe in detail.
Location of area you should be in
N 38.28.38
W 082.44.48

TIPS: DO NOT GO
ALONE on this Task, you
may encounter wildlife
including coyotes,
teens up to no good,
criminals, danger,
rough road, some rutted
out spots, the supernatural

10. THE CRUEL MURDER OF MARY MAGDELENE PITTS AND THE HAUNTING OF RIVERVIEW CEMETERY;
Mary Magdaline Pitts was born in Menifee County, KY on June 5, 1924 to Robert Herman Pitts and Lucy Walker Wilson. Both her birth and death certificates spell her name as "MARY MAGDALINE PITTS". Her headstone reads "MARY MAGDALENE PITTS CRUELLY MURDERED". By 1927, Robert Herman Pitts and Lucy Walker Wilson had parted ways, and he had moved to Argilite, Greenup Co., KY. He worked at ARMCO in Ashland and had taken in a "housekeeper" Marie Frazier.

Mary Magdaline Pitts lived with her father, his "housekeeper' and her brothers and sisters in a rugged cabin on Culp Creek in Greenup Co., until her death on December 29, 1927.

Many newspapers carried news of her death, described "the most shocking, blood-stirring criminal case in the history of Kentucky." Her death certificate says the cause of death "probably shock resulting from burns, bruises and cuts administered by father and housekeeper, Marie Frazier. Probably homicide." She was buried in Riverside Cemetery on Jan. 15, 1928. Her body was open for public viewing with an estimated 20,000 viewers. Local towns people financed an impressive monument for Mary Magdaline. Twice since it was erected, vandals have destroyed the angel which set on top of the monument. The most recent, in March 2004. A major restoration project was launched by Peggy Lynn Rowe, a movie produced from Los Angeles, Ca. LIttle Mary was subjected to torture such as being sat on a hot stove, grinding hot pepper in her wounds, and tying her up while beating her. Further research will lead you to more details of her murder. ...the first documented child abuse case in KY. The cemetery she is buried in  is host to ghost stories of its own. Find Riverside cemetery in Greenup KY, just on hill beside Pathways Inc. To left of US23

Q1: Find Mary's grave and pay your respects then tell us who is buried right beside her with no stone? Do your own research to find his connection
to Mary...what was it?
First and last name please in addition to his connection.

Q2: Turn from her grave 180
degrees over your right shoulder and start walking.
You will cross the road (all the while you should be
diagonal to her grave) Just as you are crossing the
road look for RACHEL (she is near the road) If
you gain sight of the big Ball you have likely passed
her. What type of TREE does she rest under? Some say
as you get to this spot and look back over your
shoulder toward Mary's grave you can see a small
child figure standing there by her grave. Try it and
see what you get? Steal or disturb a memento from Mary's grave and misfortune may find you...leave a memento and the opposite shall ocurr.

11.  THE OLD HOUSE...GREENUP KY & THE MOTHMAN?:  This final destination will challenge your body as well as your mind...be prepared to walk approx. 2.5 miles( 5 miles total) mostly on a recognized trail, but to get to the house you will need to make your way through tall brush and cross a small creek. If you have serious health conditions we do not reccommend you do this. We don't anticipate many will do this one actually, but this one may just be the key to WIN!  Obviously at night this part of the quest will be bonechilling simply being engulfed by the woods around you and then the approach to this lonely and forgotten place is creepy enough, but add in a race with darkness will only add to the fun. IF you go in daylight you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Greenbo Lake and the colors of Fall. Take a camera!
Any old abandoned house is creepy in and of itself...but this one ...if you look closely and allow your senses to lead you...will tell you more of a story. Try to picture the old farm back in its youth. It is difficult to find much history on the family that lived here but one ghost story details more than one sighting of a hefty man walking across the upstairs open window as you look over from the trail. Perhaps he will come out to chat a spell when he sees you coming. Another odd story of this area in Greenbo Lake Park is that of something similar to the Mothman of Potin Pleasant WV. Many locals claim to have spotted creatures like this in the woods of the area and along the trails. They even tied the mysterious vanishing of two teen boys in the 80's to this creature. Follow this link for the full story

Directions: Travel to Greenbo State Park in Greenup KY and park at the boat ramp/fishing dock lot. You will see the Michael Tygart Trail to your LEFT of the lot. Take this trail until you find the old farm. You will need to pay close attention to not miss it because the brush is thick. Look for a tree to Right of trail with a Carved ARROW (not carved by us). This is the best place to dive into the weeds and make your way toward the house.

Q1:How many bones
are on the plate (Please
do not disturb or touch the
bones you could be
disqualified from contest)

Q2: What initials are
cut into the window frame?

TIPS: Do not go alone on this task. You may encounter wildlife, water, some steep incline, thorns, rugged terrain, and the supernatural. Go At your own risk and be careful! IF you attempt this at night take good light source and dont' fall in the lake! It can get very close to the trail at times.
